The Best Vegan Pizza

By Robert Parsons May 2, 2023

If we’re going to conquer the elephant in the room, it’s that veganism gets a bad rep. Fair enough, if you’ve spent your whole life eating meat and the oh-so-irresistible delight that is cheese. We can understand why going full vegan would be tricky. However, while it may be difficult, it doesn’t have to be dull.

We’ve devised the best vegan pizza recipe to enjoy on a weeknight or a Friday night in with friends. Pair it with one of our pizza ovens, and you’re in for the tastiest and most convenient vegan food ever. This recipe will work brilliantly for a cold January night, right through until those sun-kissed summer evenings.

Why Cook with a Pizza Oven?

Before giving you the juicy details on the best vegan pizza recipe in the UK, you might be wondering if it’s necessary to invest in a pizza oven. The shorter answer is: yes, absolutely.

Pizza ovens produce high heat more quickly than traditional ovens, which is better for vegetables and toppings. Plus, these appliances generally have stone ‘decks,’ which means better tasting and crispier crust.

But okay, yes, your stomach is grumbling, so let’s get to it. Get your oven mitts on and the vegan cheese out—it’s time to start cooking.

BBQ No-Chicken Pizza

This recipe makes a perfect substitute for those mouth-watering takeaway versions you tend to find at the mainstream eateries. The recipe should feed around two people. If you have more people at the party, multiply accordingly.

For the vegan pizza base:

  • – 180mL water
  • – 1 tsp instant yeast
  • – 300g all-purpose flour
  • – ¼ tsp salt
  • – 1tsp olive oil

For the Topping:

  • – 200g tomato puree (you won’t need all of this, but a whole tube allows you to slather it on to your taste)
  • – 250g vegan cheese of your choice (we like Violife)
  • – ½ head of cauliflower
  • – 200g soy/Quron pieces
  • – 2 tbsp BBQ sauce
  • – 1 onion
  • – Optional toppings: chilli flakes/sriracha/sweetcorn

  1. First, you’ll want to make your vegan pizza dough. To do this, you must mix the flour, salt, and instant yeast in a mixing bowl. Then, add the water and olive oil. Knead the dough until it’s soft and not sticky. Throwing the dough in the air like a pro is optional.
  2. Once you’ve got the texture of your dough right, drizzle olive oil modestly over it. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour. If it’s not doughy enough, add more water. Cover the bowl with cling film or a clean kitchen towel. Allow the dough to rise. It will take around 2-3 hours.
  3. You can get your toppings ready whilst you wait. For the best texture and taste from your toppings, prepare them first. Cook the cauliflower lightly so that a fork can pierce it easily without it being too soft. Fry the onions until lightly browned. You can do this with whichever vegan pieces you have opted for, too.
  4. Once the dough has doubled in size, start getting your BBQ pizza oven ready! (Or preheat your regular oven to 200°C /450°C).
  5. Roll the dough out into two pizza bases. Spread your tomato puree on nicely, allowing room for the crust. Sprinkle on the dairy-free cheese (don’t be shy), cauliflower, vegan ‘chicken’ pieces, onions, and any extras. Put on as much or as little BBQ sauce as you like.
  6. Put in your pizza oven for around 5-10 minutes or 10-15 for a regular oven. Make sure to keep an eye on it!
  7. Enjoy your culinary masterpiece. Enjoy with dipping ketchup, vegan garlic aioli, or vegan mayonnaise.

This delicious vegan pizza recipe should leave you and whoever you’re dining with satisfied. You can vary the recipe to suit your preferences and any other particular dietary requirements. Making vegan pizza is simple, and it can act as a fantastic gateway meal to get into a plant-based diet.
